Our trip to Lubeck was cancelled due to travel issues. The bus driver is limited with driving time so we set out for Hamburg directly bus found the autobohn closed and the traffic jam was crazy. So we spent the day on the bus. Our group has connected with several folks from the other groups and between napping, reading and conversations the time went by-- 11 hours on the road. Dinner in Hamburg was in a shopping center two blocks away from our Hostel, "Generator." It's a huge complex with a lot of youth in and out. I'm in the lobby at midnight and the music is blasting in the disco next door. "Iowa" is in the disco and their kids are all drinking. Our group has gone to bed and only Monika and I are hanging out near by enjoying the music.
After dinner we ventured out on a self guided walking tour. We met at 9pm with just the Wisconsinites-- other groups ventured out to bars to watch the soccer game (Spain vs. France). Monika and Stacy took charge of the maps and after a couple of wrong turns, we finally started seeing some really cool stuff. At 10:30pm, it's still pretty light outside and I got some really nice photos. I was happy to get a bit of sight seeing in. Not that the bus ride was terrible but looking out the window of German countryside, it looked just like Wisconsin. We stopped at a gas station for lunch-- a Burger King. It would have been terrible to report the only place I'd visited today was a BK where I had to pay .5 Euro to use the restroom and it cost $3 for a small side of french fries.
