Jim loves Ricky Gervais, so we had to see this comedy. The opening scene is funny, explaining that the world the movie takes place in is where everyone always tells the truth. There are no dramas, no comedies-- only history. There is no God. The movie proceeds to imply that religion is possible only in a world that has the ability to lie. It is a fascinatingly deep comedy. The man, Mark, who invents lying is satirically looked at as Jesus at one point in the movie, as he grows his hair and beard out in depression and gets up out of bed, slipping on sandals and wearing bed sheets to answer the door... it was hard for me to laugh at that scene. It seems that in a world where there is only truth, happiness is a lot harder to find. I laughed a lot during this movie, but at one point I almost started crying as I understood the depth of it. Luckily I wasn't given too much time to dwell on it's darkness as the laughs keep coming in order to keep its promotion of atheism light. I am sure most Christians will find the film quite blasphemous.
