I spent the day in Lake Geneva for a newspaper and yearbook adviser's conference. Most everyone who attends teaches journalism and or has yearbook as a class, so I don't really feel like I am on the same page as the others (newspaper at Memorial is an extra-curricular club). Still I do learn a lot especially in the legal realm. I cut out before dinner to get back in time to catch Jessi's very last basketball game. It may be her very last high school game since it is not clear if she will play at the varsity level next year. For a few minutes in the fourth quarter the game was very exciting with a tie score, but in the end the girls ended the season without a win. The varsity team made the local news for having lost the most games in the area-- not something anyone wants any attention for. I organized a pot luck dinner for all the families after the game as a way to say so long. As the girls entered, parents cheered but the girls all had red, wet eyes. Even the coach looked like he had choked up a bit. I think the emotional rollercoaster of almost winning combined with the end of a very tough season where I would say, many of the girls are doubtful they will be back to play ball again created a lot of bitter sweet tears. While I know Jessi is thrilled to have the season done, but she will miss her friends dearly, knowing if she did make Varsity next year it would not be with the same group she has grown to really enjoy.
