I took Balt to daycare this morning and then popped by the store to get candy for my students. I came home, dressed up and took the girls to school. I encouraged Monika to dress up-- Jessi dresses up for athletic events but apparently not for an American tradition. My dress got lots of compliments, but was horribly uncomfortable. I was sweating all day and the high out was 49-- but I think the art department is warmer then the rest of the school. I was very happy to see many students and teachers dressed up. My feeling is that people who dress up for Halloween at school or work are made of creative, unique and bold stuff. They do not fear the judgment of their peers. I do not think I am looking for attention, although I got it. What I want is to make life more interesting and fun.
I stayed afterschool with newspaper editors working on getting the November issue finished. I picked up a pizza for the girls and came home to build a fire. We watched Nightmare Before Christmas and Children of the Corn. After 9:30pm, I shut down the watching of Halloween and was cursed at for ruining Halloween night, but occassionally I have to act like a parent. Erika dressed up at that point and took her party attitude elsewhere. She wore the same costume she wore in middle school this year! The high school girls stomped up to thier rooms in a huff. When I hear, "I hate you" I am afraid to admit the feeling is mutual. Love and hate meet somewhere in the middle of the circle of life right about here. I've been here before. Parenting a 17 year old eager to move out is no easy task, no matter how talented that kid is or how easy the parent is-- it is stressful.
