Balt gave us a "ruff" night. Jessi took him for a walk between 2:30am and 3, then I got him at 5am to 6. I was thrilled to find a Starbucks open nearby. At 5am, I woke to find heavy, wet snow falling that didn't bother Balt one bit. I showered and got ready, but dozed off waiting for the girls to get up. We all had the free breakfast before 9am and then I walked Balt again waiting for the girls to shower and dress. With the weather dampening the sightseeing spirit, I offered to buy a bus tour for us. I decided to stay in the same hotel tonight so that we could leave Balt in the room all day. Originally I had planned to drive into DC with Balt, picnic and play on the National Mall and take pictures of the National Cherry Blossom Festival that is from 3/20 to 4/14 --a tradition that showcases the beautiful gift of 3,000 cherry trees that the city of Tokyo gave to our nation’s capital. Well, my plans were dashed, thanks snowstorm Virgil. Jessi refused to take a bus tour, so instead, I got day passes of the public rail and we parked at the furthest station (only $4.50 parking for the whole day). We took the train and walked the mall area in the rain. Monika did not bring a winter coat and none of us brought snow boots. We got as far as the Lincoln Memorial and then Monika refused to go further -- no MLK, no White House, no museums. Jessi was hungry so we went back to the L'Enfant Plaza Metro Station where we had seen a Five Guys for a late lunch. It was my first time there, the girls second (there's a Five Guys in Madison, WI as well). We were so delighted with lunch and the warmth of the plaza that we all decided just to make our way back to the hotel to nap. We'd all come back to DC in better conditions. If Jessi ends up at the Naval Academy, they we will have opportunities galor.
