When the movie was over this evening, I heard Erika gasp, "what!?" She didn't know it was only the 2nd part of 3. By the time all the three movies are out, I could probably read The Hobbit aloud in less time. My husband and I saw An Unexpected Journey in 3D last winter. The Desolation of Smaug was not available in 3D where we saw it this evening. I think I would like to see the final installment, There and Back Again, in 3D, but either way, I'll have to wait until next December. This one was much faster paced, in part because we bounce right into the story after a quick flash back.
The highlight for this movie was a new character (not in the book), Tauriel, a wood elf, played by Evangeline Lilly, who most know from LOST. Also, not in the book was Legolas (Orlando Bloom), but seemed to fit right into the story along with Tauriel. I was glad to see a female character inserted where Tolkien had none. The times, they are a changing. Unlike, The Lord of the Ring's Arwen, was not just a love interest, she was an action hero. Young girls need to see women saving men in movies... it will better prepare them for real life.
Of course there's a cliff hanger at the end and the credits begin to roll. If the movie weren't so long it'd be unbarable, but after nearly three hours of action and amazing effects, I was ready. I must say the music for the end credits are perfect (see below). Ed Sherran wrote the song immediately after seeing the movie, then recorded it in that same day. I was already an Ed Sherran fan but this was an extra treat!
As a family, we normally see Christmas day movies. It was a fun change to make it Christmas Eve. The five of us very much enjoyed the movie, although Jessi had already seen it last week. She said it was the kind of movie she wanted to see again. Yes, she's right. I'm sure I'll get in bluray by Easter. I can't wait to spend a snow day watching all three movies in one day, in about 2 years.
