Today was one of those days I got to school before 8am and didn't get home untill after 9pm. There aren't really all that many of them in the school year, so I'm not complaining, but they wipe me out completely. I am always amazing how absolutely exhausting just talking can be. I had a great school day with kids. I absolutely love the kids in all of my classes and genuinely enjoy their company. My prep times are split up this semester which means instead of having a big chunk of time to get stuff done, I have an hour in the morning and an hour in the afternoon. I managed to run out in the morning to go home to pick up some paperwork I forgot, but in general, it's harder to get away now.
After school, we had a team meeting then I ran out to pick up Balt and grab dinner for Josh, Grace and I. I came back and enjoyed a wonderful burrito bowl with my colleagues. It's always nice to have a bit of time to talk shop with people I work with. By 6:45 middle school kids and their parents started filing in. We put together an informative power point about all of our classes with pictures of all us teachers as the South Park characters Josh made a couple of years ago. Luckily Grace looks a lot like Melissa, so we just use the same character for her. It' s all a sales pitch, to be honest. The truth is our department allocation is directly affected by how many kids sign up to take art classes. If kids don't want to take art, someone's going to lose their job... or part of it. Luckily, I'm beyond having to worry about my own position, but as a team we want to stay strong (plus, the more-- the merrier). Josh asked me if we'd ever get to 6 art teachers and I remembered thinking getting to 5 would be impossible but here we are with 5 full time teachers in our department. Art classes continue to be in high demand, some more then others. Of course art classes teach skills that no other academic class can (right brain vs. left and all that). Anyway, after 5 presentations of introducing myself and all the classes, saying many of the same jokes and all the same antidotes, I'm ready to fall into bed and melt into a blissful sleep.
