This morning I woke up at 4:30am and could not get back to sleep. I got up, made coffee and did a bit of cleaning. By 6am I called Balt down for breakfast which he was not the least bit interested in. I took him out for his walk and after taking care of his business, he wanted back inside. Although it was very humid, I knew there was more going one then just heat and drooling now. Geof had mentioned yesterday that Balt had a lot of tartar build up which I read could cause drooling but as I investigated Balt's mouth, he growled at me to stop. My google search was not very helpful. It seemed he could have anything from a foreign body in the mouth to rabies. I called my vet and of course they needed to see him but I had work all day, so Monika took him in at 1:30pm. The vet seemed not able to find anything in his mouth but he still yelped in pain. He had a 103 temp (which isn't too high for a dog but still an indication of illness), so they gave him meds and asked us to keep a close eye on him over the weekend. If he didn't improve by Sunday, then they wanted to see him. Over a holiday weekend, I knew that wasn't going to be a cheap visit. Luckily, the meds have him acting more like himself. He ate dinner and went for his evening walk. He's staying hydrated and taking care of business normally (ie. pee & poop is fine).
I had an inservice all day with longer meetings then yesterday, it seemed. Luckily at 2:30pm, Josh exclaimed he had an appointment at 3pm, so we finished our art department meeting earlier. At 3pm I had to pick up Monika and meet up with the tennis team to drive to Wausau for a tournament tomorrow. I felt bad making Balt travel in his condition but he slept the whole way and seemed fine after a short walk to sit in a cool hotel room and relax. I came back after dinner out with the team and walked him again, he seemed quite peppy but tired out quickly. I have no idea what's wrong but he's been perscribed medicine for inflimation and for infection. He's still drooling a lot, but at least he's eaten, so he can't be all that sick.
